Single Girl on Valentine's Day...

With Valentine's Day being right around the corner, being single can seem depressing... After all, who wants to be subjected to 24 hours of OTT statuses, cute couples and the lack of receiving chocolate? (That one especially sucks). It's a yet another reminder, as if I wasn't already aware, that I don't have a 'special someone', but I'm single 365 days of the year and perfectly fine, why should V-Day be any different?

Sure, Valentine's Day is predominantly about romance and showing your affection for someone, but at the end of the day it's to celebrate love - love for friends, family, and yourself. Shouldn't we get to enjoy a day of love just like everyone else without feeling like crap? - Yes!
Besides, who needs the extra calories from a box of chocolates anyway?

Here are a few ideas on how to have the best Valentine's Day, despite your relationship status!

1. Treat yo' self
Valentine's Day is about love, so spend it loving yourself. Do whatever it is that makes you happy and leaves you feeling good, whether it be shopping, going for a manicure, or even binge-watching your favourite TV show all day. Take some time to relax, use up that face mask you've been saving for a special occasion and enjoy the freedom that comes with being single!

2. Avoid tear-jerkers
I admit, I'm one of those people who watches a romantic film or listens to a song about love and immediately bursts into tears because 'why can't anyone love me the same way as Jack loves Rose in Titanic!?' but eating all the Ben & Jerry's and crying over love stories you wish you had isn't going to make you feel any better. Put down that Adele album and whip out something that'll make you cry tears of laughter instead!

3. Call or visit your family and friends
Valentine's Day is about spreading the love, so share it with the people you hold most dear in your life and let them know you love them. Chances are, not everyone in your life is in a relationship and you never know how much something such as a simple call can mean to someone, especially on a day such as this. Arrange to meet up with other single friends, grab a coffee and have a good old laugh - mates before dates anyway, right?

4. Spend the day with your girls
Friends are some of the most important people in your life, so if spending V-Day alone isn't your thing then round up some of your favourite single people and have a day to remember! Last year, myself and my friends went bowling and it was one of the best nights; who needs dinner dates when you can make memories with your best friends instead? Get dressed up, go for cocktails and cheers to being fabulously single!

5. Hit the gym
Exercise is one of the best ways to de-stress and clear your mind of anything getting you down, so what better way to forget about your single status than going for a run or getting yourself down to the gym? Plus, exercise makes you happy with the endorphins your body releases, so working out will make you feel great and look good as well! Who knows, you might even spy some eye-candy in the gym too...

Valentine's Day is only one day of the year, and just because you're single it doesn't mean you're not entitled to love like everyone else. It's natural to feel a little down on a day where the world is seemingly full of loved-up couples, but V-Day is honestly no big deal and not worth getting upset over. Being a single, independent woman is one of life's great privileges, so embrace it while you still can!
